The Elderly Care Society, established in 2023, builds on a pioneering initiative begun in 2008–2009 at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya to promote geriatric care and education in Sri Lanka. What began as undergraduate training in Geriatric Medicine evolved into the establishment of the country’s first Geriatric Clinic at Kadugannawa and later the Elderly Care Unit at Teaching Hospital, Peradeniya, incorporating active ageing programmes. The Society extends its work beyond hospitals into the community, engaging elders’ homes, village groups, and community organisations through programmes such as Active ageing programmes, art, music, social activities, and health promotion initiatives. Supported by a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals including Geriatricians and members from both younger and older generations, the Society is committed to promoting active, healthy, and dignified ageing within age-friendly communities.
Amidst financial and other developmental challenges, Sri Lanka has demonstrated remarkable strength in healthcare, achieving increased life expectancy among both males and females. As a result, Sri Lanka is now recognised as a country with a rapidly ageing population. Foreseeing this emerging challenge, the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, pioneered an Elderly Care Programme in collaboration with multiple stakeholders, including the University, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Social Services, village-level committees, and the general public. This programme adopts a comprehensive, population-based approach, aiming to promote active and healthy ageing across all stages of life, ultimately leading to a graceful and dignified old age. In addition, we actively work towards fostering environments and societal attitudes that support older adults to live with confidence, independence, and dignity. You are warmly invited to become a life member of the Elderly Care Society and benefit from its initiatives, or to contribute your valuable voluntary services towards the betterment of our ageing
